About Purim
Purim is the most festive of Jewish holidays. The story of Purim took place in Persia, during the reign of King Ahasuerus in the 5th Century BCE. The king chose Esther, a Jewish woman, to be his wife, though she hid her heritage from the king. When Haman, the king's chief adviser, ordered all subjects to bow to him, Mordecai, Esther's uncle, refused to do so for religious reasons. An enraged Haman decided to murder all Persian Jews. Convinced by Haman that the Jews were a threat, the king granted Haman the power to annihilate all the Jews living in Persia. Upon learning of Haman's evil plot Mordecai and Esther made a plan to save their people. Esther revealed to the king that she was a Jew. She persuaded the king to thwart Haman's plan. The king killed Haman and his sons instead of the Jews. Till this day Jews celebrate Purim to commemorate this great deliverance. |
